How to calculate main power cable qty for Led Video Wall?
One single power cable can typically load between 4 to 14 LED cabinets, depending on the panel type, operating voltage, and circuit breaker limits. The exact number is primarily determined by calculating your total amperage against the cable and circuit breaker limits.
1.To Calculate by WATTAGE
1. Find the Max Power Rating: Check the manufacturer's label or technical sheet for the Max Power Consumption of a single cabinet (often between 200W and 900W, depending on brightness and pixel pitch).2. Calculate Total Circuit Capacity: Multiply your circuit breaker amperage by the supply voltage.
o Example: A 20A breaker at 120V= 2400W maximum capacity.
3. Apply the 80% Rule: Never load a circuit to 100%. Keep your continuous load to 80% of the max capacity to prevent tripping. For a 2400W circuit, your safe load is 1920W.
4. Determine the Number of Cabinets: Divide the safe load by the cabinet's power consumption.
o Example: If your cabinet uses 200W at peak, 1920W/200 W=approx 9.6. You should safely connect a maximum of 9 cabinets to this specific circuit.
5. Determine the Number of Power Cables: Divide the total cabinet qty by the cable load qty. Eg., 50Panels need 50/9=6 Power cables.
2.To Calculate by Current
a. Calculate the Total Usable Current:Safety regulations (like the NEC) require continuous loads not to exceed 80% of a circuit breaker's capacity. For a standard 20A circuit breaker, the safe continuous current I_safe is:
I_safe = 20A x 0.8 = 16A
b. Find the Cabinet's Maximum Amperage:
Check the manufacturer's specification label on your specific LED module or receiving card. For example, if a standard 500x500mm die-cast cabinet draws 200W at 120v at full brightness, the current draw is:
I_cab = Watts/Voltage=200W/120V=approx 1.67A
c. Divide and Round Down:
Divide the usable current by the cabinet's current draw:
Max Cabinets= I_safe/I_cab = 16A/1.67A =approx 9.58, about 9 cabinets.
d. Determine the Number of Power Cables:
Divide the total cabinet qty by the cable load qty. Eg., 50Panels need 50/9=approx. 6 Power cables.
3.Factors Determining Your Cable Load
• Circuit Breaker Capacity: Most standard wall outlets and breaker channels use 20-amp (120V) or 16-amp (230V) circuits.• Voltage Drop: Running long power chains will drop the voltage, causing dimming. For long runs, you will need thicker gauge wire (e.g., 12AWG rather than 14AWG)
• Calculate with Peak Load: Ensure your calculations are based on the maximum brightness (full white screen), not average video playback.
• Indoor vs. Outdoor Panels: Indoor 500x500mm panels draw less power and can often accommodate up to 14 cabinets on a 20A/120V line. Outdoor high-brightness panels draw significantly more, limiting you to about 4 to 10 cabinets per line.
4. The "80% Rule"
20% safety margin:You should always maintain a 20% safety margin.For example, on a 20A breaker at 230V (4600W max capacity), your maximum safe load is 3,680W. Divide this by the max rated wattage of a single cabinet to find your safe limit.
